Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, is a common household substance that has a surprising number of uses. It is a natural antacid, deodorizer and cleanser which is environmentally safe to use. Here are just a few of the many uses of sodium bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate absorbs odors in your refrigerator, cat litter box, laundry hamper, sneakers, camping equipment and diaper pail. Adding baking soda to your laundry detergent boosts its cleaning power. It is even used as the crystal component in microdermabrasion, where its light weight and antiseptic qualities result in little or no reddening of the skin.
